Posted on :11 June 2021

The Minister for Agriculture and Forests today presented the implementation report on the plans and policies for the improvement of the Farm Shops, a follow-up report on the resolutions of the Third Session of the Third Parliament.

The Member from Bardo-Trong constituency, Hon’ble Gyambo Tshering moved the motion regarding the issues of Farm Shops during the Third Session. The Member had raised that the Farm Shops under the Food Corporation of Bhutan Limited (FCBL) sell only groceries no different from other general shops in the area and do not have farm machinery, tools, and agricultural seeds which they are supposed to sell in order to support the rural people. He also submitted that the Farm Shops can act as an aggregation center for the rural people for agriculture products.

The Minister reported that the Department of Agricultural Marketing and Cooperatives (DAMC) under the Ministry together with FCBL were directed to look into the issue.  It was reported that officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also explored the workings and the benefits of the Farm Shops. He informed the House that following the review reports from the two studies, as per the directives of the Lhengye Zhungtshog, the Ministry is still exploring the possible solutions.

The House was informed that to improve the performance of the Farm Shops, the Farm Shops will have to be either operated under the concerned Gewog Administration or DAMC.  There was also a need to look into the employment of 136 youths operating the Farm Shops as permanent employees or on contract. The Minister informed the House that the improvement plans for the Farm Shops will be implemented after the global pandemic situation gets better.
