Parliamentarians attend Sustainable Development Goals Assessment Workshop

The Chairpersons and Deputy Chairpersons of the Parliamentary Standing Committees led by the Hon’ble Speaker are attending a 4-day SDG Self-Assessment Workshop in Paro from today, 6-9 April 2021. In his opening remarks, the Hon'ble Speaker reiterated the roles of the Members of Parliament in the implementation of the SDGs and touched on the impacts of gender equality, climate change, and few more goals. He also mentioned that the SDGs are not the limits but the baselines on which tremendous opportunities for growth and development can take place. He shared his concerns about achieving the SDGs amidst the pandemic and urged for a collective effort from the implementing agencies. 

The workshop will include sessions on the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on SDGs in Bhutan, Parliament’s functionality in times of pandemics, the oversight role of Parliament in SDGs’ implementation, enhancing Bhutan’s climate change action, digital readiness of the Parliament, SDG self-assessment exercise and international experiences, and child-friendly local governance and SDGs.

The opening session was attended by the representatives from UNDP and UNICEF, Bhutan. The Workshop will produce a draft action plan for Parliament’s role in achieving SDGs.
