Women’s Leadership Summit, celebrating International Women’s Day.

Posted on :09 March 2021

Yesterday, Hon’ble Speaker Wangchuk Namgyel participated in the Women’s Leadership Summit organized by the National Commission for Women and Children to celebrate the International Women’s Day and  50th Anniversary of Bhutan’s Membership with the United Nation.  Hon’ble Dil Maya Rai was also present in the celebration.

Speaking as one of the Panelists on the topic Women in Politics, the Hon'ble Speaker highlighted the huge gap and challenges in the women’s representation both at the local government and in Parliament. Accordingly, the Speaker suggested two prong approaches to increasing women’s representation. Firstly, the 12FYP Key Performance Indicator of 15.2% of women representation in Parliament could be reviewed to set a new and higher benchmark. The threshold thought about in the summit is 33%. The strategies could then be accordingly designed. Secondly, the possibility of approach through legislation has also been recommended to increase women’s representation in the Parliament. This would require an in-depth study and consultation.

Adequate women representation is important and crucial for inclusive legislation.

The Speakers have also shared how the existing 7 women MPs in the National Assembly are empowered and contributing. Though less in number, there is women representation spread across all the 8 committees and at least  two committees are chaired by women MPs. And that the Women, Child and Youth Committee is a priority committee.

The Summit also saw a panel discussion on “Women In Leadership” and a series of Women Leaders sharing their personal journey and growth.
