Joint Parliamentary Committee on COVID-19 Preparedness and Response Committee recommends increase in quarantine period

Posted on :23 March 2020

After the 6th meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on COVID-19 Preparedness and Response, the Committee submitted the fourth set of recommendations to the Government on COVID-19 preventive measures. The recommendations were regarding the Quarantine protocol, Education, Monastic Institutions and Counseling Services to People under Quarantine.

The Committee observed that the existing epidemiological evidence about the COVID-19 has shown that it is difficult to confirm within two weeks if a person is infected with the virus and recommended the Government to look into increasing the quarantine period from the existing 14 days, either continuing at the government quarantine facility or quarantining at home with clear protocols of strict monitoring. Secondly, the Committee recommended the government to consider online teaching initiatives only for engagement and learning for students, not for summative assessment for now with appropriate awareness. The Committee noted that even though there is a restriction of the movement of monks to their own premises instead of closing down, the incidents of some being compelled to go out to perform rituals on the demands of public and outsiders visiting some institutions were reported. Therefore, the Committee recommended the government to ensure uniform  and strict implementation of preventive measures. Fourthly, the Committee recommended the government to explore the possibility of providing counseling services by both health and spiritual professionals through appropriate means explaining that some people, especially youth under quarantine, could go through mental health issues.

The Committee previously submitted eleven recommendations to the Government. The Speaker of the National Assembly  and the Chairperson of the National Council  were also present in the meeting.
