European Union (EU) Delegation calls on the Hon’ble Speaker

A Five-Member European Union (EU) Delegation led by Ms. Paola Pampaloni called on to the Hon’ble Speaker on 4th Nov, 2019. The Delegation is in Bhutan to discuss the bilateral cooperation between Bhutan and the European Union.

Ms. Paola Pampaloni thanked the Hon’ble Speaker for the warm welcome and mentioned that her team members who were in Bhutan for the first time were impressed by the beauty of Bhutan. She also mentioned that round table meeting in March this year was a good experience. And apprised Speaker on the changes taking place in EU leadership like appointment of a new president and Commissioners who will be approving the budget for the next 7 years. She, however, assured that EU will continue to support Bhutan even after LDC graduation in 2023. Further, she  said that  certain clauses of the Framework agreement of the European Investment Bank have been amended and hoped that it would be more acceptable to Bhutanese Government. 

The Speaker expressed gratitude for the continuous support  provided by the EU to Bhutan. He said that Bhutan will still need financial support after graduating from LDC since it will no longer be  eligible for certain forms of international support and grants. He mentioned that access to the European investment bank will provide an opportunity for Bhutan. 

The EU consisting of 28 countries has had strong cooperation with Bhutan since 1982.
