Austria’s Ambassador to Bhutan called on the Hon’ble Speaker

Her Excellency Mrs. Brigittee Oppinger-Walchshofer, Ambassador of Austria to Bhutan called on the Hon’ble Speaker on 19th August, 2019.. Her Excellency was accompanied by Dr. Johannes Binder, Resident Coordinator, Austrian Development Agency.


Her Excellency congratulated the Parliament of Bhutan for the step taken towards decriminalizing homosexuality and expressed that it is never an easy step. Her Excellency expressed her interest to have Parliamentary delegation from Austria to Bhutan after the upcoming election in Austria. 


Hon’ble Speaker welcomed Her Excellency and thanked Austria for her long development partner to Bhutan. Hon’ble Speaker mentioned that the Parliament is committed towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and in implementation of 12FYP. 


Their Excellencies also discussed about the women representative in the Parliament and mechanisms to increase the participation of women in the Politics.  


After the call-on, Her Excellency and Dr. Johannes Binder met with the Chairperson of Economic and Finance Committee and the Chairperson of Human Rights and Foreign Relations Committee. During the meeting, there was an exchange of ideas on tourism, hydrology, human rights and possibilities of cable cars in Bhutan and its future. Her Excellency expressed that after Bhutan graduates from Least Developed Country, Austria will still keep supporting Bhutan through Business-Business support. Economic and Finance Chairperson on behalf of all thanked Her Excellency and Austrian Government for all the support till now.  

The two countries will be celebrating  30 years of bilateral relationship on Thursday, 22nd August, 2019.
