Motion for revision of stipends for students of the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB)

Posted on :11 June 2019

The Member from Tashichhoeling constituency moved the motion for an increase in stipends for students of the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB). The Member from Khamaed - Lunana constituency supported the motion.

The Member moving the motion, submitted that the last stipend increment  from Nu.1000 to Nu. 1500 was in 2011. The Member also mentioned that  compared to students studying abroad  who are entitled to stipends between Nu.8000 and some as high as US Dollars 972.00, the stipend for RUB students are very less.  Based on the above reasons, the Member moved three motions:

  1. To revise and approve the monthly stipend from the existing Nu. 1500 to Nu.2500 per student.

  1. To approve the House Rent allowance of Nu. 1500 in addition to the stipends for those who are compulsory required to live outside the campus.

  1. A General Policy Directive that a total of 70% of students will remain on campus and 30% will remain off campus for planning and budgetary allocation purposes for RUB.

After deliberation, the third motion was referred to RUB  for further action and decision.

The House  voted on the two motions and passed the motions with 24 Yes, 5 No and 11 Abstaining out of 40 Members present and voting.
