Sensitization workshop held on Gender Responsive Planning & Budgeting for parliamentarians

A high level sensitization workshop on Gender Responsive Planning & Budgeting (GRPB) was organized yesterday by the Parliament of Bhutan in collaboration with the UNDP. The workshop was aimed at sensitizing the Members of Parliament on GRPB which is an important tool towards the empowerment of women.


The workshop started with opening statements from Tshogpon Jigme Zangpo, Speaker of National Assembly and Ms. Niamh Collier Smith, Dy. Resident Representative of the UNDP.


Presentations on understanding GRBP, GRBP trends in Asia Pacific and the role of parliamentarians in strengthening GRBP were made by Dr. Swapna Bist Joshi, consultant and Ms. Shrijna Dixon, Project officer both affiliated to UN Women. Presentation on GRPB initiative in Bhutan was also made by Ms. Kunzang Lhamu, Director for the National Commission for Women & Children.


Affirming the workshop as an important platform to better understand GRBP, the parliamentarians discussed on number of issues related to gender equality including quota in parliament, budgeting process and monitoring mechanisms for planned activities.


The workshop which was funded by the Austrian Development Cooperation was attended by  parliamentarians including some of the cabinet ministers and parliamentary officers.
