Motion on enhancing House’s engagement on SDGs endorsed

The Member from Khamdang-Ramjhar constituency who is also a member of the interim committee of the National Assembly on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) moved the motion to ensure meaningful engagement of the National Assembly on SDGs. The Member highlighted that the motion was being moved mainly to better engage the standing committees of the House to strategize in mainstreaming the SDGs within the parliamentary mechanism.


Deliberating on the motion, most of the Members made submission in support of the motion underscoring the importance of sustainable development which had long been implemented in the country owing to the noble philosophy of Gross National Happiness.


Voting on the motion, after four hours of debate, a total of 37 Members voted ‘Yes, two Members voted ‘No’ while one abstained from voting. There was a total of 40 Members present during the voting.


With the adoption of the motion, each of the standing committees will be assigned with one or more SDG goals relevant to the committee and one day during every parliamentary session will be allotted for deliberation on SDGs among others.
