Posted on :20 September 2022

The Member of the European Parliament's Delegations for Relation with South Asia Countries led by Vice President Ms. Evelyn Regnar, and another delegation led by EU Ambassador for Bhutan Mr. Ugo Astuto called on the Hon’ble Speaker of the National Assembly of Bhutan today.

Hon’ble Speaker welcomed the delegations and expressed gratitude for the European Union (EU)’s support to Bhutan and the Parliament of Bhutan. The EU has supported the Parliament of Bhutan in many specific ways. Currently, the INTER PARES and Project Nyamdrel support the Parliament of Bhutan in training the Research Officers of MPs in research skills; training of MPs and Secretariat staff in legislative scrutiny; the development of communication strategy & Legislative Scrutiny Guide; workshops on Public Hearing; and enhancing e-Parliament making parliamentary proceedings efficient. Hon’ble Speaker also expressed hopes for future interactions, experience sharing between the Parliaments, and further strengthening the ties.

Hon’ble Speaker also thanked the EU for being a strong partnership in the country’s development corporation.

Hon’ble Speaker and the Chairperson of the National Council of Bhutan are hosting a reception dinner and a cultural program this evening to experience the Bhutanese culture and share experiences.

Bilateral ties between Bhutan and the EU date back to 1982 when the EU started financing development projects in Bhutan, followed by diplomatic relations in 1985.
