The Speaker met with the newly elected Chairpersons and Deputy Chairpersons of the Standing Committees

The newly elected Chairpersons and Deputy Chairpersons of the Parliamentary Standing Committees had the first meeting with the Speaker. The meeting was also attended by the Committee Secretaries from the Secretariat. 


Opening the discussion, the Hon'ble Speaker congratulated the new Chair and Deputy Chairpersons for accepting the post and responsibilities. The Speaker also highlighted the paramount importance of the Committee in the functioning of the Parliament. The Committees are established to perform the functions of the Assembly Session in a more effective manner. He mentioned that the productiveness of the Parliamentary Sessions depends mostly on how seriously the Committee takes the responsibility assigned to them by the House. And the Chairpersons as the leader of the Committee makes all the difference in the maturity of deliberations. 


The meeting discussed various responsibilities of the Committee in further enhancing their productivity, the role of Chairperson and Deputy in striving for better results. The meeting had also delved into strengthening the Constituency visits. The issues related to the welfare of the Member of Parliament were some of the areas for discussion. On the whole the meeting between the Speaker and the Chairpersons had been found productive. 


The Chairperson and Dy. Chairperson of the Committees were elected in line with Section 320 of Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly of Bhutan 2014. There are nine standing committees in the National Assembly as of now.
