European Union Delegation Call- on to Hon’ble Speaker, Mr. Jigme Zangpo

Eleven member European Union (EU) Delegation led by His Excellency Mr. Tomasz Kolowski, Ambassador of the EU to Bhutan and India, met Hon’ble Speaker, Mr. Jigme Zangpo today at the Parliament House.


The Ambassador congratulated Hon’ble Speaker for the successful completion of his 5 Year tenure and applauded the smooth functioning of the democratically elected Second Parliament.    He also conveyed his appreciation for the successful conduct of the third National Council elections with high voter turnout and electing women members. The Ambassador re-assured EU’s  continued support to Bhutan even during  post LDC graduation.


Hon’ble Speaker thanked EU for their continued assistance to Bhutan and shared briefly some of the achievements of the Second Parliament and assured effective utilization of the EU assistance. He also informed the delegations on challenges faced by Bhutan today such as rural-urban migration, unemployment, and effects of climate change. In passing, Hon’ble Speaker also informed and sought delegation’s  support on the proposal that parliament is submitting soon to EU for funding.  Finally, Hon’ble Speaker thanked the Ambassador for EU’s continued commitments and conveyed his deepest appreciation to EU on behalf of the Parliament and people of Bhutan.


The delegation was visiting Bhutan to reconfirm EU’s commitments to Bhutan. Bhutan established formal diplomatic relation with the EU on 9th August, 1985 and of the 28 EU member countries, Bhutan has diplomatic relations with 12. The close ties between Bhutan and EU dates back to 1982, and is focussed mainly in the areas of Renewable Natural Resources,  Good Governance and Climate change.
