Finance Minister presents the Annual Budget for the financial year 2017-18 to the House

The Finance Minister today presented the annual budget for the financial year 2017-18 to the House with the outlay of Nu. 55,850.264 million. However, as per the report, the total budget appropriation for the financial year is Nu.60,777.871 million including a total expenditure of Nu.57,915.710 million, lending of Nu. 41.840 million and repayment of Nu. 2,820.321 million.


Joint sitting unanimously pass the Customs Bill of Bhutan 2017

The joint sitting of Parliament unanimously passed the Customs Bill of Bhutan 2017 earlier this morning after all 69 members present voted in favour of the Bill to be passed. His Majesty the Druk Gyalpo graces the Opening Ceremony of the Ninth Session of the Second Parliament

Today His Majesty the Druk Gyalpo graced the opening ceremony of the Ninth Session of the Second Parliament. His Majesty was received in an elaborate chipdrel ceremony to the Gyalyong Tshogkhang and the occasion was marked by traditional Zhudrel Phunesum Tshogpai ceremony.

The Members of the Royal Family, representatives of the Central Monastic Body, senior government officials, representatives of the international community and the public attended the occasion.


Young MPs from Asia-Pacific meets in Colombo

More than 50 young parliamentarians from Asia-Pacific countries had gathered in Sri Lanka from 25-26 April 2017 to discuss their role in advancing inclusive and peaceful societies and preventing violent extremism in the region. The delegation of young parliamentarians from the National Assembly of Bhutan consisted of Hon’ble Tshewang Jurmi of Chumey-Ura constituency, Hon’ble  Rinzin Dorji of Phuentsholing constituency and Hon’ble Dupthob of Boomdeling-Jamkhar constituency.



ADB Country Director calls on the Hon’ble Speaker

The Vice President of German Bundestag, Ms. Claudia Roth visited the National Assembly today. She was leading a four member delegation from the German Bundestag. Meeting with the Hon’ble Dy. New UN Resident Coordinator calls on the Hon’ble Speaker

The new UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Gerald Daly paid a courtesy call on to the Hon’ble Speaker earlier this afternoon.  He said that at a time when western democracy faces the challenge of disconnect between the elite and the people at the grassroots; Bhutan was well on track with good working mechanisms. He further added that given Bhutan’s remarkable progress, it was a privilege for the UNDP to support Bhutan.

45 Community Centre Operators trained on Virtual Zomdue

A total of 45 community centre operators were trained on Virtual Zomdue from 6-9 March 2017 at Phuentsholing.  The training which was jointly organized by the Parliament and the UNDP focused on enhancing the capacity of the community centre operators in efficient utilization of the virtual zomdue facility. Secretariat staff attend Leadership Course

A total of 13 Officers from the National Assembly Secretariat is attending a five day in-country training programme titled ‘Leadership: Leading to inspire’ in Phuentsholing from 6 -10 March, 2017. The training is aimed at equipping the participants with core leadership skills in order to enhance their professionalism. During the course of the training, the participants will mainly be engaged with introspective and practical sessions to arouse their leadership potentials.


Workshop conducted on Introduction to Basic Legal Principles and Interpretation of Statutes

A five day workshop was conducted on Introduction to Basic Legal Principles and Interpretation of Statutes for the Committee Secretaries of the National Assembly at Phuentsholing from 16-20 February 2017. During the course of workshop, the participants were able to comprehend some of the important subjects such as law making institutions, constitutional provisions related to law making and doctrine of separation of power, and rule of law.


Bhutanese parliamentary delegation attends South Asian Speakers’ summit on SDGs

A joint parliamentary delegation led by the Hon’ble Speaker Jigme Zangpo of the National Assembly attended the second South Asian Speakers’ summit on SDGs in Indore, India held from 18-20 February 2017. The summit discussed on strengthening regional cooperation and resources for SDGs. Discussions were also held on impacts of climate change and growing inequalities between men and women.
